Anax indicus (Lieftinck, 1942) — Elephant Emperor

Number: 2
Family: Aeschnidae
Genus:  Anax
Species:  Anax indicus
Common name(s): Elephant emperor
Sightings (by me): Rare
In flight (that I have seen): 24 May 2016
Location : Dhaka

The Male

Anax indicus and Anax guttatus are very similar species. They can be distinguished based on the banding pattern on the abdominal segments. The presence of the fused post-jugal yellow band on abdominal segments 6-8 is the easiest key to identify and distinguish the species from A. guttatus. According to Lieftinck (1955), the two pairs of post-jugal spots are broadly fused to form a continuous band on 6, 7 & 8. The most noticeable thing was the blue dorsal patch on S1-2, which really stands out when it is in flight.

The Female

The female is large and predominately brown in colour on both the thorax and the abdomen. However, the easy way to identify this species, is the yellow thoracic stripes, which are highly prominent, as well as the markings along the abdomen. The end segments are white/brown and the caudal appendages are large and black.
